TPG, AAJA & FYLPRO Tayo: Travel’s Throughline

August 20, 2021

August has been traditionally one of the busiest months for me the last few years.

The eighth month of the year, it’s a mile marker that signals the last hurrah of summer with the onset of fall just over the horizon and the final push toward the end of the year.

In the coming week, several of my worlds and passions collide — with the throughline of travel running across all of them.

I’m so thankful for every moment — knowing that paths that are meant to cross will cross in a series of moments that together, create a dynamic impactful narrative.

Come along for the ride!

The Points Guy

I started my career as a features journalist and I’m excited to be able to combine my love of travel and service journalism together at the Points Guy through audience driven data insights.

While I don’t write as much these days, it’s been a pleasure to work with a team led by Scott Mayerowitz. I look forward to getting up each day to work with a team that’s so supportive of the whole self and is so passionate about what they do — travel and maximizing ways to travel.

We have several openings at TPG (I’m just the messenger but feel free to DM for any questions.)

Asian American Journalists Association

I wouldn’t be here without AAJA. I’ve been a member for 19 years. I attended my first convention in Dallas, Texas in 2002. It was also the first time I ever stepped on a plane and there was no turning back after that — oh how I wish I knew about the points and miles world back then!

Since that first convention, I’ve been an AAJA VOICES reporter, graduate of the Executive Leadership Program (ELP), served both as national and local board members and helped organize Trivia Bowls in both Los Angeles and New York.

This year, I’m AAJA’s convention programming co-chair again with the amazing Jin Ding. We have a lot in store for you in the coming week coinciding with this year’s theme, “Boldly Moving Forward. Proudly Looking Back.”

Registration will close August 21, 2021 at 11:59 PM PT.

In addition, I’ve also been working on AAJA’s 40th anniversary initiatives. In our opening plenary, you will get a chance to see the other project I’ve been working on since January — oral history project.

I cannot wait to share the mini trailer that will debut next week — you’ll see why this organization has meant so much to me both personally and professionally.

FYLPRO & Tayo Help Desk

Last but not certainly least, a trip in 2019 to the Philippines through the Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPRO) changed my life.

It reignited a fire that now burns so deeply for my culture, my identity and for kapwa, that it has given me the confidence to step up and lead during a time of great change and uncertainty for everyone.

I’m currently serve as FYLPRO’s vice president and I’m honored to kick off the last major events for the year on Monday with our 9th anniversary celebration.

Catch the daily program at 8pm ET all next week on FYLPRO’s FB page. https://www.facebook.com/events/937229667125697

In addition, I’m the chair of FYLPRO COVID19 task force and project director of Tayo, a virtual help desk for the Filipino community during COVID19.

Leading and working on this project has been one of the greatest honors of my life.

Currently we have a vaccine campaign that I’m hoping you can share and help amplify via HHS’ #WeCanDoThis campaign:

-Culturally tailored webinar on the latest vaccine info led by Dr. Melissa Palma and our Tayo vaccine survey team and partners CYFAM, NCAPIP https://youtu.be/BhiLNC5tAFg

-Viral Dance Video led by Tayo Project manager Brian Tajo (thanks to Tayo product counsel Mark Calaguas for the music connect) https://youtu.be/F4ChktV6QWs

-Upcoming PSA directed by Meriden Villanueva with Jobel Vecino and Dr. Antonio Moya and CYFAM, NCAPIP and FASGI.

All of this would not have been possible with our Tayo fellows’ input and contributions led by fellowship director Krystle Canare.

Thank you to our ecom, our board and entire alum and networks.
